Description
With the international corporate globalization, investors require greater transparency and more comparability in financial statements published from different entities operating in the global market. The goal of this study is to analyze the impact, at an accounting level, of the introduction of the International Accounting Standards (IAS) in the Portuguese Insurance Sector. In 2002 the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union published the regulation 1606/2002, which defined as its main goal the convergence of financial information. This regulation aimed to contribute to a more efficient functioning of the capital market and the internal market. Regarding the Portuguese insurance business, the application of this regulation was taken by Instituto de Seguros de Portugal. IAS application was mandatory to all entities under ISP supervision, since 1st January 2008. Finally, this paper expects to determine the impacts on the information published in financial statements, due to IAS application, with more detail explanation to the significant changes recorded in accounting procedures.
