Esta tese tem como tema geral o Sistema de Saúde em S. Tomé e Príncipe. O interesse por esta temática nasceu das discussões sobre a problemática da saúde, o desenvolvimento dos cuidados de saúde e a melhoria da qualidade de vida das populações - a que não é alheio o aumento da esperança média de vida das populações nos países desenvolvidos -, e a sua intrínseca articulação com o desenvolvimento científico e tecnológico em diversas áreas disciplinares. O objetivo caracterizar o sistema de saúde em STP, incluindo as práticas de cuidados de saúde com base em conhecimentos tradicionais. Assim concluímos que o sistema de saúde de STP carece de estrutura e recursos humanos que possibilitam a incorporação de C& T. Dada a carência, prevalecem no meio social são- tomense práticas de cuidado de saúde com base em saberes leigos constituído por grupos altamente especializados e organizados hierarquicamente numa logica profissional enquadrados dentro de um sistema que denominamos de sistema semi-formal, cuja estratégia de profissionalização difere das outras categorias de profissão existente na sociedade ocidental.
This thesis has the overall theme of the Health System in S. Tomé and Príncipe. The interest in this subject arose from the discussions on the issue of health, the development of health care and improving the quality of life of the people - that is not alien to the increase in average life expectancy of people in developed countries - and their intrinsic link with the scientific and technological development in various subject areas. The goal of characterizing the health system in STP, including health care practices based on traditional knowledge. Thus we conclude that the health system STP lacks structure and human resources that enable the incorporation of C & T. Given the shortage, prevalent in the social Sao Tome health care practices based on knowledge lay groups consisting of highly specialized and hierarchically organized in a logical professional framed within a system that we call semi-formal system, whose strategy of professionalization differs other categories of profession exists in Western society.
