Apesar de pouco estudado em Portugal, sobretudo ao nível dos seus efeitos, o Investimento Direto Estrangeiro (IDE) pode ser um importante catalisador do desenvolvimento e crescimento económico das regiões. Neste trabalho é estudado o IDE presente nas regiões portuguesas, analisando a sua distribuição por NUTS III, os setores em que o IDE tem mais peso em cada região, assim como a sua evolução em três anos marcantes da recente história económica de Portugal: 1986, 1998, 2009. Os resultados indicam que, ao longo dos 23 anos analisados, o aumento do número de empresas com capitais externos permitiu uma disseminação do IDE por todas as regiões do país, para além das principais aglomerações económicas e de serviços (Lisboa e Porto). As regiões passaram a captar IDE não só para os setores em que eram já tradicionalmente especializadas, mas também para outras atividades, diversificando a estrutura produtiva regional. O aumento e diversificação do IDE coincidiram com a sua terciarização, aproximando-se da totalidade do tecido produtivo do país, ainda que continuando a privilegiar setores como a indústria transformadora.
Despite the very few studies regarding Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Portuguese regions – especially regarding its effects - FDI can be an important catalyst for regional economic development and growth. This work studies the existing FDI in the Portuguese regions, analyzing its distribution by NUTS III, the sectors in which FDI has more weight in each region, as well as it evolution in three years that marked decisive moments in recent Portuguese economic history: 1986, 1998, 2009. Over the 23 years analyzed, the results show a raise in the number of companies with FDI in Portugal. At the same time, this companies spread to all regions of the country, besides the main economic and services agglomerations (Lisbon and Oporto). The regions attracted not only FDI for the sectors in which they have already been specialized, but also for other activities, diversifying the regional productive structure. The increase and diversification of FDI coincided with the tertiarization of the economy, approaching the totality of the productive specialization of the country, while continuing to focus on sectors such as manufacturing.
