Todos os indivíduos têm a necessidade de procurar relações com os outros (Baumeister & Leary, 1995) e de acreditar que vivem num mundo justo, onde têm aquilo que merecem (Lerner, 1980). No entanto, verificamos que estas necessidades não são satisfeitas quando nos deparamos com situações de exclusão social e injustiça. Vivendo num mundo de categorizações, verifica-se que existe a tendência das pessoas favorecerem o seu próprio grupo e a considerarem-no como mais humano em comparação com o exogrupo (infra-humanização; Leyens et al., 2000). Assim, considerando a exclusão social e a injustiça como marcas da humanidade, o presente estudo definiu como objetivos verificar se estas são percebidas como tendo um conjunto de respostas idêntico nos alvos e perceber se a categorização social dos mesmos influencia essa perceção. A amostra foi constituída por 62 estudantes do ISCTE-IUL, aos quais era apresentado dois cenários, um relativo à necessidade de pertença e outro à de justiça, sendo estes vivenciados por um alvo do endogrupo (estudante do ISCTE-IUL) ou por um alvo do exogrupo (estudante de outra universidade). Os resultados demonstraram que tanto a satisfação como a não satisfação da necessidade de pertença é percebida como tendo maior influência nas necessidades humanas básicas e emoções dos alvos do que a satisfação e/ou não satisfação da necessidade de justiça. Além disso, os resultados mostram uma possível forma de infra-humanização do exogrupo, na medida em que este é considerado como tendo valores diferentes do endogrupo.
All individuals have the need to create relationships with others (Baumeister & Leary, 1995), and they need to believe in a just world, where they have what they deserve (Lerner, 1980). However, these two needs aren’t met when we are faced with situations of social exclusion and injustice. Living in a world of categorizations, it is found that there is a tendency for people to favor their own group and to consider it as more human than outgroup (infra-humanization; Leyens et al., 2000). So, considering social exclusion and injustice as hallmarks of humanness, the present study aims to verify that the unmet needs of belonging and justice are perceived as having a set of identical effects on the target, and that the target’s social categorization influences this perception. The study had a sample of 62 students from ISCTE-IUL, in which they were presented with two scenarios, one concerning the need to belong and the other the need for justice. These were experienced by a target ingroup (students from ISCTE-IUL) or a target outgroup (students from another university). The results showed that the satisfaction and/or dissatisfaction of the need to belonging seems to have greater influence on human needs and emotions in the targets than the satisfaction and/or dissatisfaction of the need for justice. In addition, the results show a possible form of infra-humanization of outgroup because this group is considered as having different values of the ingroup.
