A “segunda vaga da migração brasileira” e a crise econômica em Portugal: permanecer, transitar ou retornar

A migração luso-brasileira conheceu uma segunda vaga recentemente, atraída para Portugal num momento de crescimento econômico e abertura ao mundo. A actual estagnação europeia, particularmente sentida em Portugal, ocorre em contra-ciclo com o Brasil, onde a taxa de crescimento econômico e de emprego tem sido bastante acentuada. A abordagem da racionalidade económica nos estudos da migração faria prever um retorno em massa, que, à data, não é de todo evidente. Face à conjuntura atual este trabalho tem por objetivo compreender quais sãos os fatores que contribuem para que os imigrantes brasileiros optem por permanecer em Portugal diante das mudanças e instabilidades económicas e socias que enfrenta. Para o efeito, adota uma abordagem qualitativa e suporta-se em entrevistas em profundidade junto de 14 imigrados procurando analisar as suas trajectórias, as vivências e intenções de mobilidade geográfica identificando as interacções entre os factores relevantes para a decisão de permanecer, retornar ou transitar para outro espaço social. O estudo conclui que a abordagem económica não basta para compreender as decisões, que há outros factores de natureza afectiva, social, política e religiosa que contribuem para melhor perceber estes movimentos migratórios em situação de crise.

The Portuguese-Brazilian migration history has witness recently a second wave, attracted to Portugal, in a time of economic growth and opening to the world. The present stagnation of the European economy, especially felt in Portugal, occurs in counter-cycle with Brazil, where the economic and employment growth rates have been very high. The rational economics approach to migration studies would make us predict a massive return that to the present date is not at all evident. Considering the present conjuncture, the study intends to understand what factors contribute to the decision of Brazilian immigrants to stay in Portugal facing the changes and economic and social instabilities that are mounting in the horizon. In order to achieve this, we have adopted a qualitative approach and on the basis of 14 in-depth interviews with Brazilian immigrants we tried to analyze their trajectories, experiences, and intentions of geographical mobility by identifying the interactions between relevant factors to the decision of remaining, returning or transitioning to another social space. The study concludes that the economic approach is insufficient to understand decisions, that there are other factors of an affective, social, political, and religious nature that help better understanding these migration movements within a crisis situation.
