Description

The traditional definitions of prostitution tend to emphasize three aspects: the existence of sexual interaction, the existence of a payment for that interaction and the existence of an affective indifference between both parts, that is, between client and prostitute (Machado & Gon?alves, 2002). The concept of ?network? has recently emerged in various domains and with many associated designations, so we can refer to networks in many different fields and applications since it is used to ?designate a great variety of objects and phenomena?. The links in a primary network are mostly of affective nature, without any relationship formality. Secondary networks refer to members of our network, with whom we establish relationships in a formal context and with functional purposes (Guadalupe, 2009). Regarding the object of study, through this research, we intend to understand which networks of support there are for this population as well as the effectiveness of the network regarding the affective bonds. Therefore we can verify that, in what primary support networks are concerned, these prostitutes have their partners and then their children near them, 29.4% maintain a good relationship with their family and an equal percentage maintains a bad family relationship. Regarding secondary support networks, a part of this population makes use of active social politics, implemented by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security and applied by Coimbra?s Social Security for social support. Regarding direct social intervention, they turn to the ?Exist?ncias? Association for emotional and psychosocial support and to get office or outreach counseling.
