Description
Introduction: Food behavior patterns have been suffering significant changes, with health impact and the disturbance of binge eating recognized, recently, as a clinical entity in the diagnostic manuals. Different studies have come to explore what are the variables associated with that disruption, or just the presence of symptoms of binge eating. Thus, the objectives of this study: exploring associations between the experience of traumatic experiences (in the areas of emotional, sexual and physical), the alexithymia (its dimensions) and symptoms of binge eating; evaluating the predictive role of traumatic experiences and alexithymia for these symptoms. Methodology: 421 subject of the general population and college students filled out voluntarily the Traumatic Events Checklist (TEC; evaluates different areas of traumatic experience), Binge Eating Scale/list of eating habits (BES/IT; evaluate symptoms of binge eating) and the Toronto Alexithymia scale-20 (TAS-20; evaluates the alexithymia construct). Results: The binge eating values (LHA) have shown to be similar to those found in national studies carried out. A significant association was found (as in national and international studies) between the body mass index (BMI) and the total score of binge eating in both genders. Only in women is that the sexual trauma, family and the total of traumatic experiences have shown association with total score of LHA. In both genders, the overall score of binge eating correlated with difficulty identifying feelings and describe feelings (TAS-20), but in women has also been found association with the style-oriented thinking (TAS-20). Women who reported having had excess weight and obesity in childhood, presented current values higher food intake. The IMC, the total of traumatic experiences and difficulty identifying feelings were significant predictors of the total score. Discussion: This study confirms the role of BMI as correlate of binge eating, even if the direction of this association cannot be clarified. Additionally, it offers an important contribution to show that also a greater number of traumatic experiences and the presence of higher values in different dimensions of alexithymia are associated with binge eating.
