Description

This research aims to analyze the relationship between characteristics of personal social networks in Portuguese elderly and their satisfaction with retirement. The specific goals outlined include: characterization of the personal social networks of elderly regarding their structural and functional dimensions; analyze the relationship between sociodemographic variables and satisfaction with retirement in the following three dimensions "Job satisfaction before retirement", "Transition to retirement and initial adjustment" and "Overall satisfaction with retirement"; examine the relationship between structural and functional variables of the personal social network and satisfaction with retirement in the three dimensions considered. To achieve the outlined goals, we applied the following instruments: Personal Social Network Analysis Instrument (IARSP-Elderly) (Guadalupe & Vincent, 2012) and five items from the original version of Retirement Satisfaction Inventory (Fonseca & Paul, 1999), to a sample of 287 individuals, aged between 65 and 98 (M = 77.15), mainly in the central region of Portugal. In terms of socio-demographic characteristics, satisfaction with retirement seems to be higher in older adults with more financial income and educational attainment. Regarding the last job performed, higher status is associated with increased levels of satisfaction with retirement. Finally, and concerning the reasons the elderly identified for their retirement, disability or health issues are associated with lower satisfaction with retirement. In terms of network characteristics, we found that it was mainly the functional characteristics (the support provided) that showed significant relationships with satisfaction with retirement. It also should be noted that the three different dimensions of satisfaction with retirement appear to be associated with different types of support provided by the network.
