O objectivo deste estudo é analisar as relações existentes entre a identidade étnica e seus domínios, e dois indicadores de bem-estar psicológico: a auto-estima e o autoconceito, em adolescentes do 7º, 8º e 9º anos de escolaridade, de diferentes grupos étnicos, portugueses ou a viver em Portugal. Participaram nesta investigação 473 adolescentes, com idades compreendidas entre os 12 e os 19 anos. Os dados foram recolhidos utilizando a Escala de Autoconceito e Auto-estima (Peixoto & Almeida, 1999), e a Escala de Identidade Étnica (Umaña-Taylor et al., 2004). Os resultados revelam diferenças significativas entre o grupo de etnias africanas e o grupo de etnia portuguesa, nos seus níveis de exploração, resolução e afirmação. Os resultados também demonstram que os participantes de etnia portuguesa revelam relações significativas entre a exploração, a resolução, a auto-estima e o autoconceito. Entre os participantes de etnias africanas, também existe uma relação significativa entre o autoconceito e a resolução, e os participantes de etnias luso-africanas não apresentam relações significativas entre as variáveis do estudo. Os resultados são discutidos à luz da teoria da identidade social, da teoria da formação da identidade de Erikson, e de estudos relevantes na área da identidade étnica.
ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this study is to analyse the existing relations between ethnic identity, it’s domains, and two indicators of psychological well-being: self-esteem and self-concept, among adolescents of the 7th, 8th and 9th grades, of different ethnic groups, either Portuguese, or living in Portugal. Participants were 473 adolescents, with ages ranging from 12 to 19 years old. Data were collected using Self-concept and Self-esteem Scale (Peixoto & Almeida, 1999), and Ethnic Identity Scale (Umaña-Taylor et al., 2004). Results show that there are significant differences between the group of African ethnicities and the group of Portuguese ethnicity, on their levels of exploration, resolution and affirmation. Results also demonstrate that there are significant relations between exploration, resolution, self-esteem and self-concept, among the Portuguese participants. Among the African participants, there is also a significant relation between self-concept and resolution, and there weren’t any significant relations between these variables, for the Luso-africans participants. The results are discussed in terms of the social identity theory, the Erikson’s identity formation theory, and other relevant studies about ethnic identity.
