This work aims to explore the creative potential expressed by the notion of transmutability of digital data. It seeks to provide an understanding of the conceptual and aesthetic principles and possibilities that are inherent to software as a creative medium by allowing to link, generate and manipulate visual and auditory data, and define new relations between sounds, images and any other physical or sensory domains. In order to provide an understanding on the subject, we begin by discussing the terms and concepts that are related to the notion of transmutability. We then examine a diversity of approaches and practices that express the concept, by addressing the intentions behind these aesthetic artifacts, their methods and modes of expression and communication. Based on these guidelines, we develop a practical experimentation and illustration of the topic and its associated methods, while outlining a methodology that provides a starting point for its further creative exploration. The results of this study suggest the expressive and communicative potential of audiovisual languages that approach the mutability of digital data and, in this process, are able to provide new insights and aesthetic experiences
