A tese concentra-se num dos motivos predominantes nas obras dos surrealistas portugueses, o que utiliza o abjecto, o feio, o marginal como meios de subversão, de resistência e de marcação de uma individualidade literária. A tese partirá de uma perspectiva englobante do Abjeccionismo através da contextualização do percurso de dissensão dos surrealistas portugueses que a ele conduziu. Será ainda desenvolvida uma análise das várias visões que dele foram feitas quer pelos críticos quer pelos próprios surrealistas e abjeccionistas. A tese visará demonstrar a existência de uma literatura do abjecto em autores anteriores à definição do conceito de Abjeccionismo ou que se afastaram do ambiente no qual predominou a vertente abjeccionista. Simultaneamente, será tratada a questão das dificuldades sentidas pelos surrealistas e abjeccionistas portugueses quanto à possibilidade de publicação conjunta das suas obras. Essa dificuldade determinará a existência das antologias como suportes fundamentais para a compreensão do movimento português e como corpora possíveis de um grupo. A análise da poética do abjecto será efectuada de acordo com alguns textos significativos dos autores considerados. Será portanto mais relevante uma perspectiva panorâmica de fragmentos isolados de várias obras do que uma abordagem alargada das obras individuais. Esta análise evoluirá em dois momentos distintos: o primeiro votado aos autores da primeira fase do movimento surrealista português (1947-1953), mesmo quando os poemas analisados foram compostos depois desse intervalo; o segundo votado a alguns dos autores do chamado grupo do Café Gelo, os que foram antologiados por Mário Cesariny em Surreal-Abjeccionismo.
This dissertation focuses on one of the most prominent motifs in the work of surrealist Portuguese authors, the one in which the abject, the ugly, and the marginal are used as means of subversion and resistance, as well as of demarcation of literary individuality. The paper will be developed from the perspective of abjectionism, which will be done by taking into account the divergence amongst the surrealists, ultimately leading to the creation of Portuguese Abjeccionism. A further analysis of the multitude of visions of the Abjeccionism will be developed based on the different arguments produced both by surrealists and abjectionists, as well as critics. This work intends to illustrate the existence of a body of literature dedicated to the abject present in authors prior to the solidification of the concept of Portuguese Abjeccionism, and also from those writers who moved in different artistic circles. Additionally, the challenge faced by the Portuguese surrealists and abjeccionists regarding the possibility of publishing a combination of their works will be explored and shown as decisive in determining the creation of anthologies as fundamental support structures to the understanding of the Portuguese movement. The analysis of the literature of the abject will be elaborated based on several of the most significant texts from authors of this area. It is thought to be more fitting to develop a panoramic perspective made up of isolated poetry and prose, as opposed to conducting an exhaustive, and arguably unfocused survey. This examination will develop in two key directions. Firstly, it will consider the writers of the first stage of surrealist movement in Portugal even if, chronologically, the texts fall outside the dates normally attributed to this current (1947-1953); secondly, it will probe several of the authors of the 'Cafe Gelo' group that were anthologised by Mário Cesariny in 'Surreal-Abjectionismo'.
