O primeiro objetivo deste trabalho é conhecer a vida real das virgens mártires que existiram entre os primeiros cristãos limpando as biografias piedosas das fantasias que foram acrescentadas ao longo dos séculos. A crítica histórica retira a abundante ficção, restando apenas a verdade, tanto quanto possível, do que aconteceu. O segundo objetivo é compreender a razão que levou jovens adolescentes de boas famílias a oferecer a virgindade a Cristo e, pela fé, deixarem-se martirizar até à morte. É apresentado um conjunto de definições para que os termos utilizados no texto não criem dúvidas de interpretação ou sentido. As alterações que os textos sofreram ao longo dos séculos, intencionalmente ou não, que existem nos próprios evangelhos, permitem concluir que uma história inicial de uma primeira virgem mártir serviu de modelo para a elaboração de muitas das outras biografias de virgens mártires. A própria descrição das perseguições foi temperada com factos tão realistas como se quem os descreve estivesse presente no local do martírio, mas já se tinham passado mil anos. Os primeiros cristãos defendiam intransigentemente a renúncia sexual. No meio social em que viviam onde a liberdade sexual era permissiva, só limitada pela lei, queriam marcar a sua posição pela diferença colocando-se numa posição diametralmente oposta à que existia na sociedade. Nestas circunstâncias surgiu a virgindade consagrada, inicialmente no interior das famílias e mais tarde com as virgens concentradas em casas especiais. A virgindade por amor do Reino do Céu baseada num trecho do evangelho de Mateus é profundamente dissecada. Depois de apresentar um número enorme de virgens mártires, estudaram-se oito delas e selecionaram-se apenas três virgens mártires típicas que representam os modelos seguidos por muitas outras. São elas Ágata de Catânia, Inês de Roma e Catarina de Alexandria. Além de se tomar por base a Legenda Aurea foi feita uma análise crítica utilizando todos os elementos disponíveis dos Bollandistas. É feita uma referência especial à abundância de relíquias disponíveis em muitos países do mundo. Na conclusão, volta-se aos objetivos do início tentando explicar o que realmente aconteceu.
Abstract: The first goal is to know the real life of the virgin martyrs who existed among the early Christians, purging the pious biographies of fantasies that were added over the centuries. Historical criticism removes the abounding fiction, leaving, as much as possible, only the truth of what happened. The second goal is to understand the reason why young teenagers, from wealthy families, offer their virginity to Christ and, for faith, let themselves be martyrs. The changes that the texts have been over the centuries, intentionally or not, also happening in the Gospels themselves, would suggest that an initial story of a first virgin martyr served as a model for the development of many of the other biographies of martyr virgins. The description itself of the pursuits was exhibited with facts as realistic as if described by who was present at the place of martyrdom although a thousand years had already passed. The early Christians peremptorily advocated sexual abstinence. Facing the social surroundings in which they used to live, where sexual freedom was permissive, only limited by the law, they wanted to make a statement by placing themselves in a position diametrically opposed to that which existed in society. In these circumstances emerged the consecrated virginity, initially within the family and later on by gathering the virgins in special houses. Virginity for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven based on a passage from the Gospel of Matthew is deeply dissected. After presenting a large number of virgin martyrs, eight of them have been studied and, from those, only three typical virgin martyrs were selected, representing models followed by many others. They are Agatha of Catania, Agnes of Rome and Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Besides taking as basis the Golden Legend, a critical analysis was made using all available evidence of The Bollandists. Special reference is made to the abundance of relics in many countries of the world. In conclusion we return to the two early goals by trying to explain what really happened.
