A duração e a localização geográfica de uma missão militar podem ter diferentes impactos na família, em função da relação entre pais-filhos e das respostas dos filhos face à separação, mas também dos recursos disponíveis. O presente estudo exploratório e qualitativo, baseado em estudos de caso, pretende expandir o campo de investigação sobre o impacto da participação nestas missões na parentalidade, face ao contexto residencial (Ilhas ou Portugal Continental) do militar e da sua família. Tem como principais objetivos: identificar e analisar as principais mudanças e diferenças inter e intrafamiliares sentidas pelas famílias das Ilhas e de Portugal Continental antes, durante e após o deslocamento do militar em missões internacionais; e identificar recursos que ajudam as famílias dos militares do continente e das ilhas a lidar com os desafios associados às missões. A amostra é constituída por quatro famílias militares portuguesas, com filhos adolescentes, duas do contexto residencial das Ilhas e duas de Portugal Continental, contando com 12 participantes no total. Recorreu-se à entrevista semiestruturada para recolha de dados, procedendo-se à análise temática dos mesmos, através de um processo abdutivo e com recurso ao software QSR Nvivo11. As principais alterações ao funcionamento familiar dos militares de Portugal Continental surgem associadas à fase do deslocamento, refletindo-se na gestão de responsabilidades, na relação mãe-filhos e no envolvimento do pai militar. Por seu turno, as principais dificuldades das famílias militares das Ilhas surgem associadas à separação prolongada, pois esta separação ocorre também no pré-deslocamento e no pós-deslocamento. Em ambas as situações os principais recursos utilizados são o suporte social e os meios de comunicação, sobretudo durante a ausência física do militar. Por fim, são consideradas limitações desta investigação e apontadas implicações para investigação futura e para a intervenção com estas famílias.
The duration and the geographic location of a military mission can have different impacts on family, depending on the children-parents’ relationship and the responses of children due to the separation, but also the resources available. This exploratory qualitative study, based on case studies, intends to expand the field of research about the impact of participation in missions on parenting, over the residential context (Islands or mainland Portugal) of the military and their families. The main objectives are: identify and analyze the inter- and intra-family changes and differences experienced by families from islands and from mainland Portugal before, during and after the military deployment in international missions; and identify resources to help military’s families from islands and mainland Portugal to deal with the challenges associated with those missions. The sample consists of four Portuguese military families, with adolescent children, two from the residential context of Islands and two from mainland Portugal, with 12 participants in total. Semi-structured interviews were used for data collection, which were submitted to thematic analysis, through an abductive process and using the QSR Nvivo11 software. The main changes to military’s family functioning of mainland Portugal were associated with the deployment phase, reflected in management of responsibilities, the mother-child’s relationship and the involvement of the military father. In turn, the main difficulties of military families from Islands were associated with prolonged separation, because this separation also occurs in pre-deployment and post-deployment. In both cases the main resources used are social support and communication, especially during the physical absence of the military. Finally, limitations of this research and some implications for future research and intervention with these families are discussed.
