Esta dissertação tem como objetivo estudar as ocorrências do conceito de ἀѵάγκη nas sete peças de Sófocles. Depois da identificação e tradução dos trinta e seis passos em que o conceito está presente, é realizada uma análise de conteúdo. São estabelecidas seis categorias, considerando as dimensões: semântica, intencionalidade de comunicação e impacto estrutural na narrativa. O estudo desenvolve-se em duas direções: uma procede à análise de cada uma das sete peças, e a outra analisa o conjunto das trinta e seis ocorrências. O conceito ἀѵάγκη ilustra a questão central de cada uma das peças analisadas. A presença da ἀѵάγκη contribui para a clarificação das mensagens, modula o tom do discurso e tem implicações no desenrolar da narrativa. O trabalho realizado demonstra a importância do conceito de ἀѵάγκη nas tragédias estudadas e permite ganhar definição na leitura da obra de Sófocles como um todo.
This dissertation examines the uses of the term ἀѵάγκη in Sophocles’s seven plays. After the identification and translation of each of the thirty-six passages in which the concept is featured, the dissertation engages in a content analysis. Six categories are established, which consider the following dimensions: semantics, intentionality and structural impact in the narrative. The study is structured into two main areas: an examination of each of the seven plays, and an analysis of the thirty-six passages as a whole. The concept ἀѵάγκη highlights the central question in each of the plays considered. The presence of ἀѵάγκη contributes to the clarification of messages in the text, shapes the tone of the discourse and has a clear impact on narrative development. This study demonstrates the importance of ἀѵάγκη in the tragedies studied, and adds to the understanding of Sophocles’s work.
