Description
The adoption of CAD in a large scale enabled new programs to be conceived aimed to address the different needs of the users. During the CAD history several types of modeling came to be until it settled with a parametric modulation, which the vast majority of the programs today are based on. With CAD technologies being widely used in design for product development, there are different ways to model a given virtual model, one of them being with resorting to modeling software based in parametric design. Specifically, this dissertation aims to look into the visual parametric systems with a node-based modulation, visual elements that possess properties, with a special focus on the characteristics that these types of programs brings to the work of the designer. However, other related topics about the present study, such as generative design, are explored. Digital manufacturing techniques are also addressed in a general context due to the role they can play in the design of products, therefore it is considered necessary the demonstration of the different technologies that the designer can use. Also, to reinforce the idea, examples of projects manufactured with the technologies addressed and within the general topic of the dissertation will be presented. As a way to understand the possibilities of modeling that these systems grant to the designer, several case studies idealized in the Grasshopper plugin and which have its file available, are analyzed. The selected projects have as their final goal the fabrication using digital manufacturing technologies, as they are not only precise, but are techniques that allow the fabrication of almost any project, thus making the analysis of the projects broader. Moreover, due to the characteristics that accompany these technologies, any relationships that exist in the projects made in Grasshopper, with the digital manufacturing technologies will be observed, in order to draw conclusions
