Description
This dissertation concerns the study of the insertion of a vowel element into consonant groups CC considered problematic: the epenthetic vowel. The main objective is to verify the functioning of the epenthetic vowel in a medial position in native words from Brazilian Portuguese language spoken in the city of Maraba, Southeastern state of Para, North region of Brazil, and borrowed words from English language. Hall (2011) points out that an investigation of the epenthesis in loanwords versus native phonology would be interesting because, according to the author, there is growing evidence that these processes may work differently. The research has considered the presence / absence of the epenthetic vowel in problematic CC groups. The linguistic factors analyzed in the research were: (i) origin of the word; (ii) quality of the epenthetic vowel; (iii) type of consonant lost; (iv) context following the lost consonant; (v) reading style (phrase / word list). The analyzed social factors were: i) sex and ii) schooling. Research informants were high school students and undergraduate students in English language, with a total of 12 informants (3 women in secondary education and 3 women in higher education - 3 men in secondary education and 3 men in higher education). The selected words were taken from current English language and native words from Brazilian Portuguese language, a total of 840 stimulus. In summary, the results of the research has showed that: i) the epenthetic vowel in loans versus native words undergo the same process of phonological adaptation; ii) the most frequent epenthetic vowel is [i]; iii) the sex factor did not show any significant difference in the application of the epenthesis; iv) undergraduate students applied less epenthesis than high school students.
