Description

Microbiotec'17 - Congress of Microbiology and Biotechnology 2017

Background: Unlike the established practice, the supply of exogenous uracil cannot fully rescue uracil auxotrophy in Ura- mutants of some species of industrial and/or medical significance (e.g. Ashbya gossypii, Candida guilliermondii, C. albicans, Leishmania donovani), which require uridine for proper growth [1-4]. Here we reveal the molecular mechanism underlying this phenotype in A. gossypii and disclose common features with protozoan parasites and other flavinogenic/pathogenic fungi.

Study supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the scope of the strategic funding of UID/BIO/04469/2013 unit and COMPETE 2020 (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-006684) (Post-Doc grant to T. Q. Aguiar), BioTecNorte operation (NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000004) funded by the European Regional Development Fund under the scope of Norte2020 - Programa Operacional Regional do Norte, Project RECI/BBB-EBI/0179/2012 (FCOMP-01-0124FEDER-027462), Post-Doc grant SFRH/BPD/110640/2015 to C. Oliveira and PhD grant PD/BD/113812/2015 to R. Silva.
