O terceiro setor no apoio a pessoas adultas idosas com VIH/SIDA em Portugal

Na última década, a prevalência de casos de VIH/SIDA tem aumentado entre as pessoas adultas idosas. No entanto, a investigação não tem dirigido a sua atenção para esta população, muito menos para o terceiro setor no apoio ao VIH/SIDA. Com o propósito de contribuir para o conhecimento nesta área, este estudo tem os objetivos de conhecer os aspetos históricos e estruturais de organizações do terceiro setor (OTS) no apoio a pessoas com VIH/SIDA e conhecer as vivências de profissionais dessas organizações, tendo como foco a pessoa adulta idosa. Para atingir estes objetivos escolhemos a abordagem qualitativa com recurso ao método da história oral, visto permitir conhecer as vivências de profissionais das organizações, através das suas narrativas. O estudo foi desenvolvido em quatro (4) organizações do terceiro setor, duas situadas na região centro e duas na região centro sul de Portugal. A amostra é constituída por cinco (5) dirigentes da OTS, três (4) do sexo feminino e um (1) do sexo masculino, e por nove (8) profissionais, do sexo feminino. A recolha de dados foi realizada através de entrevista em profundidade e análise de fontes documentais, tendo sido respeitados os princípios éticos. Na análise de dados foi utilizada a técnica de análise de conteúdo, visto ser um instrumento de análise interpretativa, apoiada pelo programa QRS Nvivo. Da análise de dados surgiram duas categorias: desenvolvimento organizacional de OTS na área de VIH/SIDA e vivências de profissionais em OTS na área de VIH/SIDA. Como principais resultados constatamos que as(os) participantes, e consequentemente as OTS, têm pouca experiência na atuação com pessoas adulta idosas, não discriminam os clientes, em razão da idade, dependem fortemente dos financiamentos estatais e estabelecem poucas parcerias quer com outras OTS como com o setor lucrativo. Os desafios das OTS relacionam-se essencialmente com a dependência do financiamento estatal e a estigmatização em torno da SIDA, que dificulta a intervenção com a população em geral. Quanto às expectativas futuras, perante uma eventual cura para a epidemia, as(o) participantes ressaltam que só o tempo dirá quais as adaptações necessárias a efetuar.

In the last decade, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS cases has increased between the aged adult people. However, the investigation has not directed its attention for this population, much less for the third sector support in the HIV/AIDS area. This study has the purpose to make a contribution for the study and understanding of all the historical organizational development of third sector organizations (TSO), in the support the people with HIV/AIDS, and understand the experiences of the collaborating ones of these organizations, focusing always the elderly adults. To achieve these objectives, we chose a qualitative approach, using the oral story method, knowing that this method will allow us to understand better the life story, through the narrative of the professionals of these organizations. The study has been developed in four (4) nonprofit organizations, two located in the central region and two in the south central region of Portugal. The sample was constituted with five (5) managers/directors of third sector organizations, three (3) females and one (1) male, and eight (8) female workers of the organizations. The data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews and documentary sources, with all the ethical principles being respected. In the data analysis, we use the technique of content analysis, since it is an instrument of interpretive analysis, supported by the QRS Nvivo. Through the analysis of the data, two categories have emerged: organizational development of the TSO in the HIV/AIDS area and the experience of the collaborators of the TSO in the HIV/AIDS area. As result we notice that the participants, and consequently the TSO, have little experience with elderly people, do not discriminate the customers, in reason of the age and strongly depend of state subsidies, without establishing partnerships with other OTS or the for-profit sector. The challenges of TSO are mainly related with the dependence of the state funding and the stigma around AIDS, which difficult the intervention of the TSO. In the eventuality of the cure for the disease, the collaborators say that only time will say what the necessary changes that needs to be developed.
