A Deficiência Mental (DM) foi sendo negligenciada ao longo dos tempos, começando a ganhar maior visibilidade nos últimos anos. Assim, surgiram alguns estudos, no sentido de melhor a compreender e melhorar a Qualidade de Vida das pessoas com DM. A saúde sexual foi um dos pontos que mereceu atenção, tendo sido verificado uma grande falta de conhecimento, poucas experiências positivas e sentimentos negativos, no que toca à sexualidade, nesta população. A grande expansão deste tema, deu-se quando surgiram casos de SIDA e frequentes abusos sexuais nas pessoas com DM, daí surgiram alguns programas de educação sexual. Até então, a sexualidade era reprimida pelos seus cuidadores e familiares, o que ainda hoje se pode verificar. Desta forma, no presente trabalho e após uma primeira abordagem teórica da temática, apresentamos os resultados de um estudo empírico, por nós desenvolvido, cujo objectivo principal assentou na identificação de associações entre indicadores de Saúde Sexual e Bem-Estar das pessoas com DM. Paralelamente, verificamos os níveis de conhecimento, experiência, necessidades e atitudes sexuais, bem como, a vulnerabilidade ao abuso sexual e respostas assertivas em situações de coação sexual. O estudo envolveu 86 pessoas com DM moderada (49 homens e 37 mulheres), com idade igual ou superior a 18 anos. Os instrumentos utilizados foram o Sexuality Knowledge, Experience and Needs Scale for People with Intellectual Disability (SexKen-ID), que avalia questões relacionadas com a saúde sexual, e o Personal Wellbeing Indez – Intellectual Disability (PWI-ID), que avalia o Bem-Estar Pessoal. Os resultados sugerem que as pessoas com DM apresentam níveis baixos de conhecimento, de experiência, necessidades elevadas e sentimentos negativos face à sexualidade. No que diz respeito a situações de abuso sexual, indicaram uma baixa capacidade de responder de forma assertiva. Não foram encontradas correlações estatisticamente significativas entre a sexualidade e o Bem-Estar das pessoas com DM. De um modo geral, este estudo pretende contribuir para o aumento do conhecimento sobre diferentes aspectos da sexualidade nas pessoas com DM, tendo em conta a escassez de estudos nesta área. Esperamos, assim, contribuir para o desenvolvimento de programas de promoção do Bem-Estar e da Educação Sexual, baseados na evidência científica.
The Intellectual Disability (ID) has been neglected over the years and began to gain more visibility in recent years. Thus, some studies have emerged in this population in order to better understand and improve their quality of life. Sexual health was one of the points that deserve attention, having been shown a great lack of knowledge, few positive experiences and negative feelings from these people regarding sexuality. The great expansion of this theme began when the the first HIV cases appeared followed by the frequent sexual abuse in this population and so some sex educational programs took place. Until then, sexuality was repressed by caregivers and relatives of people with ID, which can still be seen today. Moreover, in this study, after a first theoretical approach of the theme, we present the results of an empirical study developed by us. The main purpose was the identification of associations between indicators of sexual health and Wellbeing of people with ID. In parallel we sought levels of knowledge, experience, needs and sexual attitudes and the vulnerability to sexual abuse and assertive responses to situations of sexual coercion. A total of 86 persons with moderate intellectual disability (49 men 37 women) and aged superior or equal to 18. The instruments were Sexuality Knowledge, Experience and Needs Scale for People with Intellectual Disability (SexKen-ID), which assesses issues related to sexual health, and the Personal Wellbeing Index – Intellectual Disability (PWI-ID), that evaluates the Personal Wellbeing. The results suggest that people with ID have low levels of Knowledge, experience, high needs and negative feelings towards sexuality. About sexual abuse, in general terms, they indicated, a low capacity to respond assertively. There were no statistically significant correlation between sexuality and Wellbeing of persons with ID. In general, this study aimed to contribute to increased knowledge about different aspects of sexuality in people with ID, taking into account the scarcity of studies in this area. We hope we can give an important contribution to the development of programs to promote the Wellbeing and Sexual Education Based on scientific evidence.
