Esta tese pretende recrear a imaxe marabillosa do Oriente que se difunde na Península Ibérica nos séculos finais da Idade Media. Para cumprir tal cometido, estúdanse os monstros e seres fantásticos que aparecían nos libros de viaxes que exploraban o continente asiático. Os relatos de viaxes escollidos son aqueles que chegaron a circular na Península desde o século XIV ao XVI. En primeiro lugar, analizarase a figura do monstro, o concepto de Asia no Medievo europeo e a redescuberta do Oriente na Idade Media. Estes capítulos son necesarios para comprender despois tanto as características coma a importancia da relación entre o monstro e este territorio, e poder analizalos desde a perspectiva da Europa medieval. Despois, seguindo as diferentes rexións de Asia, estúdanse os monstros que se atopan nos libros de viaxes medievais seleccionados, coas súas características e os lugares nos que se sitúan. En cada un destes territorios, farase unha pequena introdución de posibles mitos anteriores e despois agrúpanse os monstros segundo o seu emprazamento concreto, que pode ser real ou imaxinario. Desta maneira podemos ver qué panorama monstruoso se crea para cada lugar, e ter así unha imaxe completa do continente, ao mesmo tempo que de cada rexión. Por último, e o obxectivo final, é analizar qué datos nos aporta esta imaxe monstruosa dos libros de viaxes sobre o Oriente, qué é o que define este panorama marabilloso: as diferencias entre os diferentes relatos, patróns que segue ou datos únicos e excepcionais. Desta forma, indicarase cales destes datos nos aportan información sobre o Oriente, tanto sensacións que se poida transmitir sobre o territorio (medo, fascinación...) como pistas que nos poidan dar sobre as xentes dese lugar. Tamén se destacarán aqueles conceptos que traspasan os libros de viaxes e acaban por arraigar na sociedade do momento, coma a alteridade ou o “home salvaxe”.
This thesis tries to recreate the marvelous image of the Orient that spread throughout the Iberian Peninsula during the last centuries of the Middle Ages. In order to do this, we will study the monsters and fantastic creatures that appeared in travel literature that explored Asia. We will focus our attention on travel texts that circulated in the Iberian Peninsula from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries. First, we need to analyze the concept of a monster, the conceptions about Asia held in medieval Europe and the re-discovery of the East in the Middle Ages. These chapters are necessary to understand both the characteristics and the importance of the relationship between monsters and this region, and be able to analyze them from the perspective of medieval Europe. Secondly, we will study the characteristics of monsters found in the selected travel texts in different regions of Asia and the places in which they are mentioned. In each region, there will first be an introduction to some possible older myths and then the monsters will be grouped according to their specific location in space, which could be real or imaginary. This way, we can see the topography of monsters created for each region, which will allow us to have a complete picture of the continent as well as each region within. Lastly, the ultimate objective is to analyze what kind of information about the East does this landscape of monsters derived from travel literature give us, and what defines this marvelous landscape: the differences between different tales, tropes or the unique and exceptional details. In this manner, we will see how these devices give us information about the East, both about the feelings that are communicated about a territory (fear, fascination…) and clues that they can give us about the peoples of these places. Also, it will be important to highlight concepts that go beyond travel texts and became ingrained within society of that time, such as alterity or the “wild man.”
