O início do séc. XXI é uma época de considerável interesse na morte. Arqueólogos descrevem a pré-história de ritos de morte, historiadores comparam e contrastam os ritos de eras mais recentes, e antropologistas descrevem padrões contemporâneos de lidar com a morte. Os seres humanos são animais, e morrem, mas acima de tudo têm consciência. Adicionando estes factos, pode-se discutir, de uma perspectiva evolucionária, que a morte faz parte de um meio ao qual o animal humano necessitou adaptar-se. Assim, o rito mortuário é visto como a resposta adaptativa do ser humano à morte, com uma linguagem ritual escolhida como forma de resposta. É precisamente porque a linguagem é o meio através do qual o ser humano obtém o seu sentido de consciência que pode servir de base de recriação para a sensibilização da morte, e é a arquitectura, através da sua linguagem única que tem o maior desafio.

The beginning of the XXI century is a time of considerable interest in death. Archaeologists describe the prehistory of death rites, historians compare and contrast the rites of more recent times, and anthropologists describe contemporary patterns of dealing with death. Human beings are animals, and die, but above all they have a conscience. Putting these facts together, we can argue, from an evolutionary perspective, that death is part of an environment to which the human animal needed to adapt. Being so, the mortuary rite is seen as an adaptive response from the human being towards death, with a ritual language chosen as a means of response. Because language is the way thru which the human being obtains his feeling of conscience, it can be the base of recreation for awareness of death, and it’s architecture, thru it’s unique language that has the biggest challenge.
