Imagens de envelhecimento em profissionais de saúde

O envelhecimento é um processo fisiológico, gradual, previsível e inevitável, característico a todos os seres vivos. É um processo maturacional, determinado de forma genética, mas modulado de forma ambiental, não derivando exclusivamente de determinantes específicos, mas sim de um conjunto de factores, tais como hereditários e genéticos, o meio físico, social e psicológico. Embora alguns autores quantifiquem o envelhecimento como algo negativo, outros conseguem associar o fenómeno a algo positivo, onde não haja apenas perdas e limitações. No seu nível mais básico, uma imagem é vista como uma representação ou cópia da realidade, encontrada muitas vezes em certos tipos de quadros, estatuas e fotografia, que almejam apresentar uma autêntica “imagem-viva”. As imagens moldam e constituem concepções tanto de profissionais como de leigos, do que realmente significa envelhecer, e portanto, o tratamento que as pessoas mais velhas recebem. Desta forma, o estudo das imagens sobre o envelhecimento é o estudo das ideias que temos sobre o mesmo. Relativamente ao papel dos profissionais de saúde com pacientes idosos, estes têm também as suas imagens, representações e atitudes perante os idosos. Este estudo centra-se nas imagens da velhice e do envelhecimento emergentes nos profissionais que trabalham com idosos (médicos, enfermeiros, psicólogos, técnicos de radiologia, fisioterapeutas, entre outros profissionais). Para atingir esse objectivo foi utilizado um questionário sociodemográfico e a escala imAges (Sousa, Cerqueira & Galante, 2008), aplicados a uma amostra de 211 profissionais de saúde. Os principais resultados indicam que os profissionais de saúde de um modo geral apresentam imagens sobre o envelhecimento mais negativas, sendo que as variáveis idade, profissão e experiência profissional parecem ter algum impacto na diferenciação das imagens.

Aging is a physiological, gradual, predictable and inevitable process characteristic of all living beings. It’s a maturational process, determined by genetic form, but modulated by environment, not deriving exclusively of specific determinants, but from a number of factors, such as hereditary and genetic, and physical, social and psychological enviroments. Although some authors quantify aging as something negative, others can associate the phenomenon with something positive, where there aren’t only loss and limitations. At its most basic level, an image is viewed as a representation or copy of reality, often found in certain types of paintings, statues and photography that aims to present an authentic "image-alive". Images shape and form conceptions of both professional and laymen, of what it means to age, and therefore the treatment that older people receive. Thus, the study of aging images, is the study of the ideas we have about aging. Regarding the role of health professionals with elderly patients, they also have their images, representations and attitudes towards the elderly. This study focuses on the images of old age and aging of the professionals working with older people (doctors, nurses, psychologists, radiology technicians, physical therapists, and other professionals). To achieve this, we used a sociodemographic questionnaire and the images scale (Sousa Cerqueira & Galante, 2008), applied to a sample of 211 health professionals. The main results indicate that health professionals generally have images about aging more negative, and the variables of age, profession and experience seem to have some impact on the differentiation of images.
