Description
The Garagem de São João has more than half a century of history. The site before the construction a garage had major projects including a movie theater. This building nowadays is abandoned and with visible signs of degradation. However, it is used to collect vehicles of Covilhã´s fire department. The Garagem de São João was used as a bus garage, a workshop, service station and car trade. In fact, the location of this property has advantages in the urban context of Covilhã, because the node adjacent road, or 25 de Abril Avenue is the main on-ramp to the center of Covilhã (city hall square) and the lower part of the city (Bairro da estação). On the trip to city of Guarda this site has always been a point of reference. The growth of the outside surroundings of the city of Covilhã led to estrangement and abandonment in the area surrounding the former garage. In response to these conditions, it was developed a proposal for rehabilitation in the present building. It could have done also a proposal for intervention in the environment, particularly the Largo de São João de Malta and surrounding area, however, it would require more time and research to do so. The proposed solutions took into account the advantages of the accesses, the surrounding space and the social context of flows and mobility from that location. The proposal is developed with the rehabilitation of the building without destroying it. In the detriment of the aesthetic factor, proves to be one of the following questions: what does the city of Covilhã need to be less dependent on the University (UBI) and what other external factors? After a few experimental projects, the topic came up on the vertical farms. The idea is a project that brings the architecture of urban agriculture, aquaculture, and somehow, some cultural activities, which encourage some exhibitions, shows, meetings. And consequently, the project name was called MeC - Markets and Culture.
