O presente estudo exploratório procura relacionar bilinguismo e personalidade em bilíngues que possuem como primeira língua (L1) o português e como segunda língua (L2) o inglês. Tal relação foi explorada e testada através de Questionário de Histórico de Linguagem e de Autoavaliação de Proficiência para a variável bilinguismo e do Inventário dos Cinco Grandes Fatores de Personalidade (IGFP-5) para a variável personalidade. A pesquisa contou com 126 participantes jovens adultos maiores de 18 anos, que responderam as questões do Questionário, que procurou conhecer melhor a história dos participantes com suas línguas, através de perguntas gerais, como idade de aprendizado e idade de fluência, e perguntas sobre a proficiência dos participantes. A última parte do Questionário contava com perguntas relacionando a L2 dos participantes e suas percepções de personalidade, através de perguntas sobre o uso da L2 em suas atividades diárias e a importância da L2 na personalidade dos indivíduos. O IGFP-5 mensura, através de 44 itens, cinco dimensões de personalidade: Openness (Abertura), Conscientiousness (Conscienciosidade), Extroversion (Extroversão), Agreeableness (Amabilidade) e Neuroticism (Neuroticismo). Os dados foram analisados utilizando o software SPSS versão 21, procurando correlações entre as perguntas extraídas do Questionário e as dimensões do IGFP-5. A análise dos dados não revelou correlações significativas entre bilinguismo e personalidade, contrariando as hipóteses iniciais do trabalho. Possíveis explicações para os resultados, bem como sugestões para estudos futuros a partir das limitações desta pesquisa são apontadas.
The present exploratory study seeks to correlate bilingualism and personality in bilinguals whose first language (L1) is Brazilian Portuguese and second language (L2) is English. Such correlation was explored and tested through a Language History and Self-Evaluated Proficiency Questionnaire for the bilingualism variable and the Big Five Inventory (BFI) in its Brazilian Portuguese version for the personality variable. The study had a total of 126 participants, who were young adults over 18 years old. The participants had to answer the questions of the Questionnaire, which sought to get to know better their language history through general questions, such as learning age and fluency age, and questions about their proficiency. The last part of the Questionnaire had questions relating the participants’ L2 with their perception of personality, through questions about the use of their L2 during daily activities and the importance of the L2 in their personalities. The BFI measures, through 44 items, five personality dimensions: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism. The data were analysed using the SPSS version 21 software, looking for correlations between the questions extracted from the Questionnaire and the BFI dimensions. The data analysis did not show significant correlations between bilingualism and personality, countering the study’s initial hypothesis. Possible explanations for the results, as well as suggestions for future studies taking into consideration the limitations of the present study are indicated.
