Over the last couple of years, China has increased its worldwide participation in matter of foreign direct investment, mainly towards developing countries. The vast majority is aimed at Asia and the contribution for Africa is constantly growing. The main purpose of this paper is to empirically analyze, the determinants of China's foreign direct investment, from 2003 to 2012, in the African and Asian regions. The results identify the size of the market, the institutional environment and the bilateral trade as determinants of China's foreign direct investment in the Asian region, while the most influential factors of China's FDI in the African region are the natural resources and the market dimension. We therefore conclude, that when China's investment is aimed at the exploitation of natural resources, the institutional environment of the destination countries doesn't seem to have any significance.
