The subprime crisis is a financial crisis that began in mid-2007 in the USA, which soon spread worldwide. In 2010, some Eurozone countries were surprised by a new crisis, the sovereign debt crisis. Some people argue that this crisis resulted from a transformation of the subprime crisis. This issue has been the subject of many reviews. The present study addresses to the origin of the financial crisis, its impact on Portuguese banking sector and how the five largest national banks have been responding. To this end, in a comparative scenario, some indicators are analyzed: the Return on Equity, the Total Assets, the Core Tier 1 ratio, the Tier 1 ratio, the non performing loans coverage ratio, the loan-to-deposits ratio, among others. On the basis of the analyses, it was possible to observe that the sovereign debt crisis is having an impact that is substantially higher than the subprime financial crisis. However, despite the adverse economic and financial context, the national banking sector has proved resilient and able to fulfill the requirements announced. In relation to the sample banks, these have made strengthening risk coverage in the face of increasing default rate that comes with and demonstrate conditions to fulfill a Core tier 1 solvency ratio exceeding 10% in 2013 and subsequent years. The next step will necessarily be a greater integration of banking supervision, to prevent or minimize the effects of the next possible financial crisis.
