In this work we study the relationships between space and time through human practices, in society. We try to identify the contribution of space (architecture, the city, territory, material culture) to the processes of production and reproduction of social and cultural life; to the maintenance of the integrity of social groups through time; to the process of change creation. We try to gather a conceptual frame that enables us to understand the role of space to the identification of groups and individuals; to the definition of relations of power between them; to the formation of memory and the experience of history. We study, in particular, the 'theory of practice' and the concept of 'habitus', by Pierre Bourdieu; 'structuration theory', by Anthony Giddens; rituals and rites, in their interrelationship with the practices of space. We underline the connections to social sciences engaged by some architects, especially Aldo Van Eyck, both in his theoretical as in his built works.
