The main objective of this thesis is to study the composition three Lisbon’s gardens across time, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, in order to illustrate the botanical diversity of the gardens at the time of their origins and the possible timing of the entry of exotic plants in Lisbon. This information beyond its historical value may also contribute to the restoration projects of historic gardens, making known, which tree species used at time. To address this issue, three gardens have been selected – Ajuda Botanic Garden, Tapada das Necessidades and Jardim da Estrela - these gardens created, during the mentioned historical period, played a significant role in the enrichment of its botanical collections. For each case, will be made a research of historical documents regarding to the composition of the garden (catalogs and inventories), the arboreal current species and a synthesis of all this information collected. Finally, there will be a comparative analysis of all this data so that it is possible to obtain records on the composition of these gardens during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as well as presenting a range of approximate time concerning the introduction of exotic species in the gardens under study
