Reflecting the general history of Lisbon, the text shows the relations and the importance which the river Tagus had on the development of the Lisbon society in an urbanistic sense as well as in a social and cultural sense. It will be shown that the disappearance of many public areas in Lisbon where people could get together, like squares, markets and walkways happened at the same time as also the view and the contact withe the river Tagus got and more reduced, all due to constructions which grew along the river banks in the name of the modernization of the country. Also many important passageways of the city, instead of being kept and protected, like it always has been in the rural logic which has been applied in Lisbon until the first half of the 19th century, now are large lanes.
