Description

The microbial production of lipids and carotenoids is influenced by the experimental culture conditions, such as the initial pH of the medium, the temperature and the agitation. In this work we study the influence of pH, temperature and agitation on the production of fatty acids and carotenoids by the yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides NCYC 921, cultivated in shake flasks. The maximum production of carotenoids (3,66 μg.L-1.h-1) occurred at pH 4,5; temperature 30ºC and 150 rpm agitation. The maximum production of fatty acids was obtained at pH 4,0 (0,02g.L-1.h-1), at a temperature of 30ºC (0,01g.L-1.h-1) and 120 rpm agitation (0,01 g.L-1.h-1).
