Neste trabalho procurou-se investigar a construção de categorias étnico-raciais nos registos estatísticos, com especial relevo para os mecanismos censitários. Perguntando como foram estas categorias construídas em Portugal e no Brasil, traçamos o seu processo de produção e institucionalização. Em Portugal as categorias étnico-raciais foram desmobilizadas institucional e socialmente; no Brasil, elas inscreveram-se na esfera pública e ganharam o estatuto de políticas sociais. Partindo da assunção de que estas categorias possuem uma história, recorreu-se a uma abordagem historiográfica que permitiu seguir as modalidades destas categorizações em contextos históricos diversificados. Esta historização levou-nos a recuperar as categorias censitárias do Portugal colonial, simultaneamente auscultando as batalhas conceptuais e ideológicas pelas categorizações legítimas no Brasil coetâneo. Compreender como as batalhas conceptuais em torno destas classificações fizeram parte das representações da nação e de quem lhe pertence constitui uma parcela significativa deste trabalho. Concluímos que no Brasil verifica-se uma recuperação das identidades primordiais e uma sua mobilização em contexto nacional que resulta de um aprofundamento do multiculturalismo. Em Portugal observa-se uma apropriação da linguagem do interculturalismo que expressa a diluição dessas mesmas identidades. Utilizando a noção de repertório cultural, analisamos os discursos de actores privilegiados no domínio da categorização de identidades étnico-raciais. Definimos quatro repertórios diferenciados em termos da forma como constroem a identidade, a inserção estrutural, as fronteiras entre os grupos e a etnicidade. Contrastamos a pluralidade de repertórios no contexto brasileiro com a unicidade em contexto português. Estes repertórios sugerem formas distintas de inscrição das categorias étnico-raciais na esfera pública e estatal.
In this study we sought to investigate the construction of ethnic and racial categories in statistical records, with particular emphasis on the census mechanism. Asking how these categories were built in Portugal and Brazil, we have drawn their production and institutionalization process. In Portugal the ethnic and racial categories were demobilized institutionally and socially, in Brazil, they were incorporated in the public and state sphere and gained the status of social policies. Assuming that these categories have a history, we use a historical approach, which allows us to follow the modalities of these categorizations in diverse historical contexts. This historicization led us to recover the census categories of colonial Portugal, surveying simultaneously the conceptual and ideological battles by the legitimate categorizations in coeval Brazil. We show how the conceptual battles over such classifications were part of the representations of the nation and who belongs to it. We conclude that in Brazil there is a recovery of primordial identities and their mobilization in the national context that results in a deepening of multiculturalism. In Portugal, interculturalism is the mainstreamed language which expresses the dilution of these identities. Using the notion of cultural repertoire, we analyze the speeches of key-actors. We define four different repertoires in terms of identity building, structural integration, boundaries between groups and ethnicity. The plurality of repertoires in the Brazilian context is contrasted with the uniformity of the Portuguese repertoire. These repertoires suggest different way of ethnic and racial categories inscription in the state and public sphere.
