No presente estudo pretendemos analisar o impacto do insucesso escolar nos alunos do 5º e 7º ano de escolaridade antes e após situação de reprovação. Para efeito foi realizado um estudo longitudinal com dois momentos avaliativos, um no início do 2º período do anterior ano letivo e outro no início do 2º período no ano letivo seguinte. Participaram neste estudo 175 alunos que responderam à escala de autoestima e autoconceito (Peixoto & Almeida, 1999) e à escala de orientação motivacional de Skaalvik (1997). Os participantes deste estudo foram divididos em três grupos sendo que 61 nunca tinham reprovado, 52 tinham reprovado mais do que uma vez e os restantes 62 tinham reprovado pela primeira vez recentemente, destes últimos 24 alunos responderam ainda a uma entrevista construída para o efeito. Através dos resultados, verificou-se que não existem diferenças na autoestima entre os alunos que já passaram por várias situações de insucesso escolar e aqueles que a vivenciaram recentemente pela primeira vez. Isto significa que apesar do insucesso, os alunos apresentam uma autoestima aceitável, assim como mantém um autoconceito académico elevado. Os sentimentos vivenciados após a reprovação são de tristeza que se poderia traduzir num declínio da autoestima com o tempo, contudo o suporte que estes recebem por parte dos pais e colegas pode justificar a subida da autoestima. Estes alunos atribuem as causas do insucesso ao comportamento e falta de estudo, por outro lado a experiência de reprovação parece incentivar os alunos a tornarem-se mais responsáveis e a apoiarem-se em estratégias para o sucesso.
ABSTRACT: In the present study, we intend to analyze the impact of lack of school success in 5th and 7th grade students before and after a fail situation. For accomplishment of the study, a longitudinal study was made with two evaluation moments: one at the beginning of the 2nd period of the current school year, and the other, at the beginning of the 2nd period of the following school year. In this study 175 students have participated and answered to the self-esteem and self-concept scale (Peixoto & Almeida, 1999) and to the motivational orientation scale of Skaalvik (1997). The participants of this study were divided into three groups, being that 61 had never failed, 52 had failed more than once, and the last 62 had failed recently for the first time, 24 students of this last group also completed an interview made to this effect. Through the results, it was verified that it does not exist any differences between the self-esteem of students that went through various situations of school failure and of those that experienced it recently for the first time. This means that although experiencing failure, students do show an acceptable self-esteem, just like they maintain a high academic self-concept. The feelings experienced after a situation of school failure are feelings of sadness that could have translated into a decline of self-esteem with the increasing of time, however, the support they receive from parents and peers can justify the increase of self-esteem. These students attribute the causes of school failure to behavior and lack of study; on the other side, the experience of school failure itself seems to motivate students to become more responsible and support themselves on strategies to achieve success.
