A motivação dos militares da Guarda Nacional Republicana tem influência direta na qualidade dos serviços prestados, tanto a nível individual como organizacional, para com a sociedade. O presente estudo, subordinado ao tema "A motivação no acesso à Guarda Nacional Republicana", visa saber quais as motivações que levam um cidadão a querer pertencer aos quadros permanentes desta força de segurança de natureza militar. Assim, foi aplicado um inquérito por questionário ao curso de formação de guardas 2012/2013, em que o método de amostragem escolhido foi a amostragem por conveniência. O presente trabalho encontra-se dividido em três capítulos fundamentais. O primeiro capítulo refere-se à revisão bibliográfica, onde são abordados os principais conceitos e teorias de motivação e a motivação nas instituições de segurança. O segundo capítulo versa sobre a Guarda Nacional Republicana, nomeadamente sobre o recrutamento e selecção nesta força de segurança. O terceiro capítulo é dedicado ao estudo empírico, designadamente metodologia, amostra, instrumento de investigação e resultados. Resultante do estudo empírico é possível concluir que os factores de motivação que mais influenciam o acesso à Guarda Nacional Republicana são a estabilidade profissional, os benefícios, a realização pessoal, a responsabilidade, o equilíbrio e a instituição militar. Concluiu-se ainda que a idade, a situação profissional anterior e as habilitações literárias, influenciam a motivação dos candidatos. Por último, propõe-se que sejam definidas novas estratégias ou alteradas as já existentes, de modo a que no futuro seja possível motivar mais e melhores candidatos.

The motivation of the military in the Guarda Nacional Republicana has a direct influence on the quality of the services provided to society, both at an individual and at an organizational level. This study, entitled "Motivation in the access to the Guarda Nacional Republicana", aims at knowing the motivations that make a citizen want to belong to the permanent staff of this security force of a military nature. Thus, a survey was carried out in the 2012/2013 guard training course, in which the chosen sampling method was the convenience sampling one. The present work is divided into three main chapters. The first chapter deals with the bibliographical review, which addresses the main concepts and theories of motivation, and motivation in security institutions. The second chapter deals with the Guarda Nacional Republicana, particularly with recruitment and selection in this security force. The third chapter is devoted to the empirical study, namely its methodology, sample, research instrument and results. Resulting from the empirical study we may conclude that the main motivation factors that influence the access to the GNR are professional stability, benefits, personal achievement, responsibility, balance and the military institution. It is further concluded that age, previous employment status and educational attainment also influence the motivation of candidates. Finally, it is proposed that new strategies should be defined or the existing ones changed, in order to make it possible to motivate more and better candidates in the future.
