Propõe-se neste trabalho atingir dois grandes objectivos. O primeiro relaciona-se com aspectos metodológicos e com a preocupação em fundar princípios ontológicos claros a partir dos quais essa metodologia abstracta encaixe num segundo objectivo que é a de uma proposta da sua aplicação prática, concretamente ao estudo da construção da União Europeia, em particular enfatizando a importância da zona monetária europeia. No primeiro objectivo o autor tem a intenção de observar a realidade económica, no seu sentido mais lato, fazendo-o primeiramente através do paradigma integral, uma metodologia pluralista que segue a linha de pensamento do filósofo norte-americano Ken Wilber. Com essa base, procurar-se-á "recuperar" alguns fundamentos da "velha" e da nova escola do institucionalismo económico, procurando acrescentar e aprofundar as ideias iniciais de Veblen do virar do séc. XIX para o séc. XX e da abordagem institucional de Douglass North. Propõe-se pegar nos fundamentos que se considera mais importantes dessas escolas e acrescentar-lhe alguns insights modernos, sobretudo pegando no trabalho de Hogdson bem como explorando também os mais recentes desenvolvimentos no trabalho de North. Atingido o primeiro objectivo, partir-se-á para uma proposta de aplicação prática da metodologia criada à construção do projecto da União Europeia, dedicando especial atenção às características endógenas da zona monetária europeia.
In this work, it will be proposed to achieve two main goals. The first is related with methodological aspects and with the preoccupation to build clear ontological principles, from which we can reach a second goal which is to study the European Union construction, emphasizing the importance of the European monetary area. In the first goal, the author have the intention of looking to the economic reality, in the broadest sense, doing it through the integral paradigm, a pluralistic methodology that follows the thought of the north-American philosopher Ken Wilber. With that base, we will be looking to "rescue" some old fundamental thoughts of the early institutional economics school as well as some ideas from the "new" institutional economics. In other words, we will be looking to Veblen's seminal thoughts from the late 19th century and the early 20th century, trying to relate those with the "new" institutional work of Douglass North. It will be proposed to add some modern insights, particularly exploring Hogdson's work as well as some recent new insights from North. With the accomplishment of the first goal, we will try to use that framework to study the European Union institutional evolution, with special emphasis to the endogeneity forces and spillover effects of the European currency area.
