A síndrome de burnout é um fenómeno psicossocial que resulta de uma tensão emocional crónica, vivenciada por profissionais cujo trabalho envolve o relacionamento intenso e frequente com pessoas que necessitam de algum tipo de cuidado. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a relação entre o comprometimento organizacional e o burnout em 106 professores universitários da cidade do Porto, com idades compreendidas entre os 25 e os 68 anos (M=43.66). Foram utilizados, como instrumentos de pesquisa, o Maslach Burnout Inventory Educators Survey (MBI-ED), o Questionário de Compromisso e um questionário demográfico para averiguar outras variáveis, considerando as especificidades da atividade laboral dos professores envolvidos. Os resultados deste estudo apontam para a existência associações significativas entre as 3 sub-escalas do comprometimento organizacional e as três sub-escalas do burnout, bem como entre as sub-escalas de ambos os instrumentos, comprometimento organizacional e burnout (MBI); existem ainda associações entre a Idade, o Nº de filhos, o Nº de horas semanais e a sub-escala Exaustão Emocional (burnout); não tendo sido encontradas associações entre estas variáveis na sub-escala do comprometimento organizacional. Os resultados indicam também diferenças significativas na subescala Exaustão Emocional (burnout) por Género; na sub-escala CO Instrumental; na sub-escala CO Instrumental por Habilitações Literárias; no CO Instrumental, na Exaustão Emocional (burnout) e na Realização Pessoal (burnout) por Tipo de Contrato; no CO Instrumental, na Exaustão Emocional (burnout) e na Realização Pessoal (burnout) dependendo se exerce ou não funções em outra instituição; no CO Normativo e no CO Instrumental em função do estabelecimento de ensino.
Burnout is a psychosocial phenomenon that results from a chronic emotional stress experienced by professionals whose work involves frequent and intense relationship with people who require assistance. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between organizational commitment and burnout in 106 university professors belonging to Porto, aged between 25 and 68 (M=43.66). The research instruments used were the Maslach Burnout Inventory Educators Survey (MBI-ED), the Commitment Questionnaire and a demographic questionnaire to investigate other variables, considering the specificities of the labor activity of the teachers involved. The results of this study indicate the existence of significant associations between the three subscales of organizational commitment and the three burnout subscales and between the subscales of both instruments, organizational commitment and burnout (MBI). There are associations between age, the number of children, number of hours per week and the subscale Emotional Exhaustion (burnout); not having been found associations between these variables in organizational commitment subscale. The results also indicate significant differences in subscale Emotional Exhaustion (burnout) by Gender; in the subscale instrumental commitment; in the sub-scale instrumental commitment for Education; in the instrumental commitment; in Emotional Exhaustion (burnout) and in Personal Achievement (burnout) by Contract type; in the Instrumental commitment, in the Emotional Exhaustion (burnout) and the Personal Achievement (burnout) depending on whether or not exercise functions in another institution; the normative commitment and instrumental commitment depending on the type of educational establishment.
