Segundo dados da Direção Geral da Saúde (DGS), durante o ano de 2006 ocorreram em Portugal 9523 fraturas do colo do fémur, as quais atingiram gastos hospitalares na ordem dos 52 milhões de euros. A mesma fonte estima a mortalidade entre 20% a 30% durante um ano após fratura, referindo que a incapacidade funcional grave atinge uma prevalência de 40% no mesmo período. Objetivo: Conhecer as consequências na capacidade funcional do idoso vítima de queda, da qual resulte fratura da extremidade proximal do fémur. Metodologia: O presente estudo é um estudo de caracter descritivo, longitudinal, correlacional e prospetivo enquadrando se assim numa metodologia quantitativa. A amostra englobou 35 idosos na primeira avaliação e trinta na segunda, utentes internados no serviço de traumatologia da Unidade Hospitalar de Bragança. A colheita de dados ocorreu entre Fevereiro e Junho de 2014 e a segunda avaliação foi realizada entre Agosto e Dezembro de 2014. Pretendeu-se avaliar o grau de recuperação da capacidade funcional apos fratura da extremidade proximal do fémur, o medo de cair e caracterizar as quedas. O instrumento utilizado para calculo do grau de recuperação funcional foi o índice de Katz. Resultados: Da amostra estudada 33,3% apresentaram fratura do colo do fémur e as restantes 66,6% apresentaram fraturas trocantéricas, subtrocantéricas e intertrocantéricas. Foi instituído tratamento cirúrgico em 93,3%. Os valores do índice de Katz diminuíu de 15,53 para 12,93 pontos. O grau de recuperação da independência funcional é significativamente maior em doentes que realizaram osteossíntese com prótese da anca, seja ela total ou parcial. Conclusão: As variáveis que mais influenciaram na recuperação funcional são: o tipo de fratura e o tipo de osteossíntese. Verificou-se um declínio da capacidade funcional, e paralelamente um aumento do medo de cair.

Methodology: This research is a descriptive, longitudinal, prospective correlational study with a quantitative methodology. The sample consisted of 35 elderly patients at the first assessment and thirty in the second, all admitted to the trauma service of the Bragança Hospital Unit. Data collection took place between February and June 2014 and the second evaluation was conducted between August and December 2014. It was intended to assess the degree of recovery of functional ability after fracture of the proximal end of the femur, the fear of falling and characterize the falls. The instrument used for calculating the degree of functional recovery was the Katz index Results: Of the sample studied 33.3% had femoral neck fracture and the remaining 66.6% had trochanteric, subtrochanteric and intertrochanteric fractures. Surgical treatment was instituted in 93.3%. The values of the Katz index decreased from 15.53 to 12.93 points. The degree of recovery of functional independence is significantly higher in patients who went under osteosynthesis with hip prosthesis, whether it was partial or total. Conclusion: The variables that most influenced the functional recovery were: the type of fracture and the type of osteosynthesis. There was a decline in functional capacity and in parallel an increase in the fear of falling.
