A Artilharia de Campanha e os novos a mbientes operacionais são, por si só, um tema atraente e pertinente. No entanto, esta relevância pode aumentar, no momento em que, como novo Ambiente Operacional, surge o caso de estudo do TO do Afeganistão. Na actualidade, concretiza-se como um palco de marcantes conflitos que merecem a atenção e o empenho da esfera internacional. O TO do Afeganistão constitui um objecto de estudo muito actual e interessante, no qual a metodologia de emprego da Artilharia de Campanha se torna uma incógnita, sendo explorada neste trabalho de investigação. O Afeganistão é maioritariamente montanhoso (com um terreno muito irregular e de difícil mobilidade) e com características climatéricas extremas, próprias do clima de montanha, onde se prevê, à partida, uma maior exigência e um maior desgaste para as forças militares empenhadas no terreno. Possuindo a capacidade de efectuar um enorme emprego de fogos, a Artilharia de Campanha, por um lado, poderá influenciar em grande parte o decurso de um combate convencional, mas por outro, apresenta óbvias limitações quan do do outro lado se encontra uma ameaça assimétrica que actua misturada com a população civil. Deste modo, pretende-se desenvolver esta temática e a consequente investigação, com vista a definir o emprego da Artilharia de Campanha no Afeganistão e, consequentemente, prever a possível implementação dos meios necessários, de modo a que a Artilharia de Campanha Portuguesa possa actuar neste tipo de cenários.

Abstract The Field Artillery and the new operating environments are, by themselves, an attractive and relevant theme, however this can increase relevance, at the time, as new Operating Environment, arises TO case study of Afghanistan. At present, it takes form as a stage of conflicts that deserve the attention and commitment of the international sphere. The TO of Afghanistan is a concrete object of study very current and interesting, in which the commitment of the Field Artillery becomes uncertain and is exploited in this research. Afghanistan is largely mountainous (with a very irregular terrain and difficult mobility) and extreme weather characteristics typical of mountain climate, where it provides, the outset, greater demand and higher wear for military forces engaged in the field. With the ability to make a huge employment of fires, the Field Artillery, on the one hand, could largely influence the course of a conventional combat, but otherwise, there is an advantage when the other side is an asymmetric threat that acts blended with the civilian population. Thus, we intend to develop this theme and the ensuing investigation, to define the employment of the Field Artillery in Afghanistan and thus provide for the possible implementation of the ne cessary resources, so that the Portuguese Field Artillery can be engaged in this type of scenarios.
