Clubes nocturnos modernos em Lisboa: sociabilidade, diversão e transgressão (1917-1927)

Os anos 1920 entraram para o imaginário ocidental como os “loucos anos 20”, conhecidos pela busca desenfreada do prazer e do divertimento, que se segue aos críticos anos de guerra, mas também da vontade de inovar, modernizar e liberalizar costumes e comportamentos. Os clubes nocturnos e os cabarets marcam presença e são apontados como um exemplo do espírito dos tempos então vividos. Partindo do inventário dos clubes nocturnos modernos existentes em Lisboa entre 1917 e 1927, estabelece-se a cronologia da sua existência, o processo de implantação na cidade, identificando os agentes envolvidos e as vivências decorrentes das novas práticas de sociabilidade, averiguando a mudança ou a continuidade das mesmas, facilitando uma apreciação sobre a sua importância e significado na vida urbana e na definição da cidade enquanto espaço cosmopolita, moderno e boémio. Para tal percorrem-se diversos aspectos da vida e existência destes estabelecimentos, o tipo de actividades e sociabilidades que promovem, a caracterização e motivação de quem os frequenta, identificando os actores e seus objectivos, as relações que estabelecem entre si, caracterizando as acções e os comportamentos desenvolvidos no processo de construção destes espaços, sublinhando a sua potencialidade enquanto produtores de identidades próprias. A transgressão vista como mote de modernidade é objecto de reflexão, contemplando-se tanto a transgressão legal como a violação dos padrões morais socialmente mais implantados. Elabora-se uma comparação com outras realidades semelhantes que tinham lugar contemporaneamente por toda a Europa, reflectindo-se ainda sobre a forma como estes estabelecimentos são representados pela literatura, cinema e imprensa da época.

The 1920s came to the Western imagination as the "crazy 20s", known by the unbridled pursuit of pleasure and fun, which follows the critical years of war, but also the desire to innovate, modernize and liberalize customs and behavior. The nightclubs and cabarets highlight their presence and are pointed out as an example of the spirit of the times then lived. Based on the inventory of existing modern nightclubs in Lisbon between 1917 and 1927, it is established a chronology of its existence and of the process of its deployment in the city, identifying those involved and the experiences of the new practices of sociability, looking into it for its changes or continuity, granting an appreciation of its importance and meaning in the urban life and the definition of a town as an area of the cosmopolitan, modern and bohemian space. For that purpose one travels through different aspects of life and existence of these establishments, the kind of activities and sociability they promote, the characterization and motivation of those who attend, identifying the actors and their objectives, establishing the relationships among them, characterizing the actions and the behaviors developed in the process of building these spaces, highlighting its potential as producers of their own identities. Transgression seen as motto of modernity is the subject of reflection, analyzing either legal transgression or the violation of moral standards more socially rooted. It is made a comparison with other similar situations that happened contemporary across Europe, making a reflection on how these institutions are represented in literature, film and media of the time.
