Os grupos de artes marciais (GAM) têm papel de relevo na sociedade Timorense, integrando atualmente cerca de 20000 adolescentes divididos em 20-30 grupos diferentes que foram considerados fonte de insegurança e potenciais ameaças à estabilidade do país. Recorrendo à abordagem da Psicologia Social Comunitária, pretende-se decifrar os significados que a comunidade Timorense atribui à pertença a estes grupos, motivações para a pertença aos grupos, funções desempenhadas pelos GAM para os seus membros e para o sistema alargado e os aspetos que permitem diferenciar os vários GAM Timorenses. Para tal, foi desenvolvido um estudo qualitativo com 20 participantes - adolescentes e adultos Timorenses - tendo sido conduzidos 3 grupos focais e 5 entrevistas individuais. Os resultados sugerem que os significados atribuídos à pertença aos GAM, aparecem associados ao sentimento de comunidade e ao percurso histórico do país. A motivação para pertença surge associada sobretudo ao suporte social, desenvolvimento pessoal, aquisição de técnicas de defesa. Os GAM têm como função principal a promoção de relações de apoio mútuo entre os seus membros, o desenvolvimento global, a socialização e a proteção dos indivíduos; ao nível da comunidade alargada, são fonte de suporte e de instabilidade. Finalmente, a distintividade intergrupal surge associada a práticas identitárias, condutas de interação e estrutura grupal. Este trabalho constitui assim um impulso a futuras investigações que integrem a perspetiva da Psicologia Social Comunitária no âmbito de projetos multidisciplinar, podendo ser aprofundadas as questões relacionadas com as dinâmicas destes grupos e que venham a sustentar intervenções futuras.
The Martial Arts Groups (MAG) has an important role in East Timorese society. Currently the MAG comprises about 20,000 teenagers that are divided among 20-30 different of these groups. They have been considered sources of insecurity and potential threats to the stability of the country. The approach of Community Social Psychology aims to understand the meaning that the Timorese community confers to the belong to these groups, motivations, functions performed by MAG for its members and for the extended system and aspects to differentiate between the various Timorese MAG. To this end, a qualitative study was developed with 20 participants – Timorese teenagers and adults - having been conducted three focus groups and 5 individual interviews. The results suggest that the meanings attributed to belonging to a MAG, appear associated with the sense of community and the historical background of the country. The motivation for belonging to these groups is mainly related to social support, personal development and acquisition of defense techniques. The MAG has as main function to promote mutual help among its members, the overall development, socialization and protection of individuals and, at the level, of the wider community, The MAG are a source of support and instability. Finally, intergroup distinctiveness appears associated with identity practices, behaviors and interaction group structure. Therefore this work is an incentive to further investigations that integrate the perspective of Community Social Psychology within multidisciplinary projects, being able to develop issues related to the dynamics of these groups that will sustain future interventions.
