O objectivo desta dissertação é testar a aplicabilidade da teoria de Marthe Robert sobre tipos de personagens, descrita no livro Romance das Origens, Origens do Romance, concebida pela autora para ser aplicada a todos os romances modernos e também à análise de pessoas reais. No primeiro capítulo, a par da explicação da tipologia de Robert, designadamente, a classificação de personagens em Bastardos e Enjeitados, analisam-se ainda dois textos de Freud, “Family Romances”, fundamental para a teoria de Robert, e “Dostoyevsky and Parricide”. No segundo capítulo, aplica-se a tipologia proposta por Robert apresentada no capítulo anterior, através da análise de três protagonistas de três romances de autores de línguas e contextos literários acentuadamente distintos: Arkádi, criado por F. Dostoiévski em O Adolescente; Winston, criação de G. Orwell em 1984; e Caim, de J. Saramago do romance homónimo. As vantagens e insuficiências da teoria de Robert para a análise de romances são comentadas na conclusão da tese.

The purpose of this dissertation is to test the applicability of Marthe Robert's theory on types of characters described in her Origins of the Novel and the Novel of Origins, conceived by the author to be applied to all modern novels and to the analysis of real people. In the first chapter, besides the explanation of the typology of Robert, namely, the classification of characters in Bastardos and Enjeitados, two texts of Freud are also analyzed, namely, "Family Romances", fundamental to Robert's theory, and "Dostoyevsky and Parricide". In the second chapter, the typology proposed by Robert which was presented in the previous chapter is applied to the analysis of three protagonists of three novels of notably different writers and literary contexts: Arkady, created by F. Dostoevsky in The Adolescent; Winston, creation of G. Orwell in 1984; and Cain, by J. Saramago of the novel of the same name. In the conclusion of the dissertation, the advantages and shortcomings of Robert's theory are commented.
