Clark Blaise, autor cuja obra se centra em grande parte no short story, quer seja na escrita dentro do género ou na publicação de colectâneas, escreve o texto que é traduzido neste trabalho projecto, “Going to India”. Apesar da sua complexidade e dos temas inovadores que apresenta, o autor é pouco conhecido e publicado em Portugal. De facto, este trabalho apresenta a primeira tradução para português de um texto de sua autoria. Passa-se o mesmo com a literatura canadiana e com o género literário em que o texto se insere. À proposta de tradução apresentada junta-se um comentário que abarca uma parte de análise literária e outra dedicada aos Estudos de Tradução. Para além de ser um exercício de análise detalhada dos temas do texto a ser traduzido e de reflectir sobre algumas temáticas da literatura canadiana da segunda metade do séc. XX e do séc. XXI aborda, nomeadamente questões de identidade, o comentário estuda várias teorias de tradução, mas centra-se naquelas em que se dá primazia à tradução enquanto processo de comunicação intercultural, e ao papel do tradutor enquanto comunicador dentro desse processo. Este enquadramento teórico vai servir para explicar os constrangimentos que operam durante a tradução e apresenta-se como ponte para a análise de, o que se denomina na dissertação, estratégias de tradução. O estudo das estratégias tem uma componente teórica em que se analisam as propostas de Vinay e Darbelnet, Newmark, Chesterman e Molina e Hurtado Albir, e outra mais prática em que se observam estratégias aplicadas a problemas específicos da tradução apresentada, explicando, ainda, a razão dessas escolhas. O trabalho prático da análise das estratégias vai ser reflexo da visão funcionalista da tradução de Nord que diz que o contexto comunicativo do TP e do TC são obrigatoriamente diferentes.
Abstract: Clark Blaise, author whose work focuses largely on the short story, as a writer and an editor, writes the text that is translated here, "Going to India". Despite the complexity and innovative themes of his works, the author is little known and published in Portugal. In fact, this work presents the first translation to Portuguese of a text by the author. Both Canadian literature and the short story are also little published in Portugal. The translation is accompanied by a commentary that includes a section of literary analysis and another on Translation Studies. Other than the detailed analysis of the themes of Blaise’s text and a reflection on some of the subjects in Canadian literature of the second half of the twentieth century and the twenty-first century, such as problems on identity, the commentary presents various theories of translation, focusing on those which study translation as a process of intercultural communication, and the role of the translator as a communicator. This theoretical framework will help to explain the constraints that operate during the translation process, and it will present itself as a bridge to the analysis of translation strategies. The study of translation strategies presented here has a theoretical component in which the proposals of Vinay and Darbelnet, Newmark, Chesterman and Molina and Hurtado Albir, are discussed and a more practical one where strategies applied to specific problems of this translation are studied, while explaining the reason behind those choices. The last section of the work will be a reflection of Nord’s functionalist view of translation which states that the communicative context in which ST and TT are produced differ.
