This study aims to understand the Quality of Life and the Emotional Distress of Cancer Patients (N=63) and what it is the association between Quality of Life and the Coping Strategies used. This study also want to understand the Quality of Life and the Emotional Distress of Informal Caregivers of Cancer Patients (N=30). For this, were used as instruments the FACT-G – version 4 (Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy Measurement System; Arnold, Eremenco, Cella, Pais-Ribeiro, & Doro, 2000), the Distress Thermometer (Bacalhau, 2004), the EQdVCFO (Quality of Life Caregiver/Family of Cancer Patient Scale; Santos, Pais-Ribeiro, & Lopes, 2003) and the CHIP (Coping with Health Injuries and Problems Scale; Endler, Parker, & Summerfeldt, 1998). The results show that Quality of Life of Cancer Patients appears to be at a reasonable level, with the Functional Well-Being and the Physical Well-Being as the most affected dimensions, and also high levels of Distress associated, in most of cases. The Physical Well-Being, the Emotional Well-Being and the Functional Well-Being and Palliative and Emotional Coping Strategies show a negative relationship. Quality of Life of Informal Caregivers show to be also at a reasonable level, with the Personal Implications of Care and Emotional Overload as the most affected dimensions. Informal Caregivers also show significant levels of Distress, in most of cases. Thus it seems imperative to intervene on the patients´ needs and also caregivers´, who have a central role during illness process.
