Descrição

Tese de mestrado, Pintura, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Belas Artes, 2013

The following investigation - The Meeting - initially concerns the notion of an other: the meeting with an internal "other", as evoked by Paul Celan in his text The Meridian. This "other" - which reveals itself as the most intimate interior - is an unknown. Such an understanding of the nature of the "other" permits us to redefine the work of art as a poem (as understood in a broader sense, encompassing all forms of creation, poiesis): the work of art is a meeting with this unknown interior. In this redefinition, we cite some developments regarding Celan contained in the book La poesie comme expérience by Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe. Secondly, it attempts to understand this meeting in the work of art and in love. In light of a reading of O Amor e o Ocidente by Dennis de Rougemont, I will treat the opposite phenomenon understood here as love fusion, found in the myth of Tristan and Isolde, and of which I also detect a distinct echo in the novel Morte em Veneza by Thomas Mann. This counter example allows us to clarify the meaning of ecstasy in S. Teresa De Avila, as, on the one hand, the demanding active love of Rougemont and on the other, the violence of the love experience as analyzed by Maria Zambrano. Subsequently I deal with the possibility of a confrontation with a concrete work of art, Água Viva de Clarice Lispector. Here the meeting is associated with the incessant search for the living of the instant. Lastly, I present that which, in a sense, was the origin of this investigation: a brief chapter about my drawings, which never ceased to accompany intimately the experience of the meeting
