Objective: The main objective of this research was to study the influence of orientation style for motherhood upon maternal perception of infant behavior, for temperament characteristics, eating behavior and crying pattern. Sample: Mothers (N = 42) of babies between 0 and 7 months of age, recruited in private clinics of Pediatrics and among personal contacts of the researcher. Instruments: After reading the participant information paper and informed consent being obtained, each participant filled, along with the researcher, the Sociodemographic and Clinical Questionnaire. Then four questionnaires were given to participants: Facilitators and Regulators Questionnaire (FRQ), Infant Characteristics Questionnaire (ICQ), Baby Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (BEBQ) and Crying Pattern Questionnaire (CPQ), completed in this order. Hypotheses: We tested three specific hypotheses in which the independent variable was the orientation style for motherhood and the dependent variables were: the temperament of the baby (H1), the eating behavior of the baby (H2) and the crying pattern of the baby (H3). Results: Through regression analysis, H1 was partially confirmed. H2 and H3 were not confirmed, however, it was observed that some sociodemographic and clinical variables play an important role at these themes. Conclusion: Some subscales of the temperament of the baby appear to be explained by the orientation style for motherhood, but they do not work in the same direction as perceived by the mother, once that some aspects seem to be particularly influenced by physiological issues. Thus, issues more related to the quality of mother-infant communication seem to be influenced primarily by characteristics of maternal functioning.
