A tese de doutoramento desenvolvida nas páginas que se seguem visa investigar as relações entre o sistema literário espanhol e o sistema literário português a partir de um levantamento cartográfico do intercâmbio translativo que se deu entre ambos, nessa direcção, entre 1780 e 1850. Trata-se, logo, de um estudo em torno do diálogo interliterário e intercultural que, através da tradução, assumindo a forma de traduções, teve lugar entre Espanha e Portugal desde o último quartel do século XVIII até aos meados da centúria de oitocentos. O seu propósito é oferecer uma visão panorâmica da literatura espanhola importada por essa via no espaço cultural português ao longo de uma época em que se cimentam os pilares do nosso tempo, e em que o afastamento entre povos irmãos surge – no campo literário e não só – como sendo a tónica geral, num quadro dinâmico de complexas redes de (in)dependências e (des)equilíbrios de poder entretecidas dialecticamente entre as nações literárias aqui tratadas, no qual entram ainda em jogo outros sistemas da república mundial das letras. Ao lidar com instáveis fronteiras imaginárias (estado-nação, língua, identidade), esta tese pisa, afortunadamente, um terreno muito pouco seguro. Por esta razão, munimo-nos dos fundamentos conceptuais e das ferramentas metodológicas que fornecem as áreas (trans)disciplinares, também elas sem balizas nítidas ou rígidas, da Literatura Comparada e dos Estudos de Tradução. Porosidade, permeabilidade, dilatação, cruzamento, transferência (entre línguas, entre disciplinas, entre períodos históricos e literários) serão, sob essa perspectiva, noções-chave. Todavia, este trabalho entende-se apenas como um ponto de partida na procura de respostas para um conjunto de questões que, em última instância, se prende directamente com o hic et nunc de quem observa. Como toda a empresa historiográfica, também esta esquadrinha no passado para tentar entender o presente – um presente em que, felizmente, as relações entre as culturas desse (heterogéneo e imaginado) espaço que é a Península Ibérica suscitam grande interesse e em que alguma opacidade concernente à importação literária entre as línguas castelhana e portuguesa, do ponto de vista sincrónico como diacrónico, está a ser banida. A presente tese pretende dar uma contribuição nesse sentido, concentrando-se na literatura espanhola vertida para português no período que vai dos finais do Antigo Regime à consolidação do liberalismo, para dessa forma trazer à tona (mais) alguns dos vasos comunicantes soterrados debaixo de uma, pelo menos aparente, desértica camada superficial. Ao pôr à vista os textos traduzidos no período em foco, os quais foi preciso antes de mais localizar e inventariar, tenta-se pôr a vista sobre as fendas que a tradução abre por entre esse muro que, alegadamente, se levanta(va) entre as literaturas espanhola e portuguesa. Tendo precisamente em vista os objectivos de longo prazo que presidem à investigação aqui encetada, concede-se particular atenção ao enquadramento teórico e historiográfico necessário para futuras abordagens, na expectativa (e no desejo) de proporcionar dados e instrumentos de utilidade para um estudo, mais alargado e necessariamente colectivo, das circunstâncias em que teve lugar a transferência de bens culturais na Península Ibérica no decorrer da (chamada) Idade Contemporânea.
The doctoral thesis developed in the following pages aims to investigate the relations between the Spanish literary system and the Portuguese literary system having as a starting point a cartographic survey of the translative exchange that occurred between both literatures, in that direction, between 1780 and 1850. It is a study on interliterary and intercultural dialogue which, through translation and in the form of translations, took place between Spain and Portugal from the last quarter of the eighteenth century until the middle of the nineteenth century. Its purpose is to offer a panoramic overview of the Spanish literature thus imported into the Portuguese cultural space during an era in which the pillars of our time are cemented, and in which the separation between these two fraternal peoples arises – in the literary field and not only – as being the general thrust, within a dynamic framework of complex networks of (in)dependencies and (im)balances dialectically interwoven between the literary nations here dealt with, in which other systems of the world republic of letters still play a part. In dealing with unstable imaginary frontiers (nation-state, language, identity), this thesis fortunately treads a rather unsafe ground. For this reason, we rely on the conceptual foundations and methodological tools provided by the (trans)disciplinary areas, also without clear or rigid markings, of Comparative Literature and Translation Studies. Porosity, permeability, dilation, crossing, transference (between languages, between disciplines, between historical and literary periods) will, from this perspective, be key notions. However, this work is understood only as a starting point in the search for answers to a set of questions that, ultimately, is directly related to the hic et nunc of those who observe. Like all historiographical enterprises, this one also scrutinizes the past to try to understand the present – a present in which, fortunately, the relations between the cultures of this (heterogeneous and imagined) space, the Iberian Peninsula, arouse great interest and in which some opacity concerning the literary import between the Spanish and Portuguese languages, from both the synchronic and the diachronic point of view, is being banished. This thesis aims to make a contribution in this respect, concentrating on the Spanish literature that was translated into Portuguese in the period ranging from the end of the Old Regime to the consolidation of liberalism, in order to bring to light (more) some of the communicating vessels buried under a, at least apparent, barren superficial layer. By bringing to light the texts translated in the period under analysis, which were, first of all, to be located and inventoried, we try to look at the cracks on that wall opened by the translation which, allegedly, rise (rose) between the Spanish and the Portuguese literatures. In view of the long-term objectives of the research undertaken here, particular attention is given to the theoretical and historiographic framework necessary for future approaches, in the expectation (and the desire) to provide data and tools for a more extended, and necessarily collective study of the circumstances in which the transfer of cultural goods in the Iberian Peninsula occurred during the course of the (so-called) Late Modern Period.
