O construto envelhecimento da população coloca-nos desafios em termos sociais, económicos, nas políticas de saúde e consequentemente ao nível científico. Assim sendo, justifica-se o empenho para um maior conhecimento da população idosa. Assim, este trabalho de investigação, tem por objectivo estudar a prevalência de depressão e a influência do funcionamento cognitivo na Qualidade de Vida em idosos institucionalizados. Neste estudo participaram 81 sujeitos, dos 65 aos 95 anos de idade. Foram aplicados os seguintes instrumentos: Questionário de dados gerais; Mini Exame Mental State (MMSE) Escala de depressão geriátrica (EDG) e o questionário de Qualidade de vida - WHOQOL-OLD. No que diz respeito aos resultados obtidos, verificámos que 46,9% dos idosos da nossa amostra evidenciavam um nível de depressão ligeiro e 14,8% um nível de depressão grave. No que se refere ao funcionamento cognitivo salientamos que 49,4% dos idosos revelam ter um funcionamento cognitivo elevado, enquanto 50,6% revelam um bom funcionamento cognitivo. São os idosos com um funcionamento cognitivo elevado que reportam uma melhor Qualidade de Vida. Os 38,3% dos idosos sem depressão também sugerem ter melhor Qualidade de Vida. Na nossa amostra não encontramos diferenças estatisticamente significativas em função da idade e do tempo de institucionalização. Concluiu-se também que o tempo de institucionalização não interfere com o funcionamento cognitivo.
The construct aging of population nowadays brings us social challenges such as, economic challenges, health policies and challenges at the scientific level. In this context, it is clear that a promotion of a greater knowledge of the elderly population is needed. Thus, this research, aims to study the prevalence of depression and the influence of cognitive function in the quality of life of institutionalized elderly. This study enrolled 81 subjects from 65 to 95 years old. The instruments we applied are the following: general data questionnaire, Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) questionnaire and the Quality of Life - WHOQOL-OLD. Regarding the results, we found that 46.9% of the elderly in the sample evidenced a level of soft depression and 14.8%, a level of severe depression. Regarding the cognitive functioning, we noted that 49.4% of elderly shows a high cognitive functioning, whereas 50.6% showed a good cognitive functioning. The elderly with a high cognitive functioning reported a better quality of life than the others. The 38.3% of the elderly without depression also suggest having a better quality of life. In the sample we found no statistically significant differences based on age and length of institutionalization. We determined that time of institutionalization does not interfere with cognitive functioning.
