This research aims to study the role that financial institutions play in the economy, analyzing the main aggregates of the Financial and Non-financial Accounts from Portugal between 1995 and 2010. Analyzing Non-financial Accounts can be concluded that financial institutions play an important role in the savings of the Portuguese economy, and even increased its contribution in recent years. Besides savings, financial institutions also have a key role both in Net Lending/Borrowing Position and in Change of the Net Worth, having contradicted the negative trend of the Portuguese economy in the last years. As for the Financial Accounts, it appears that the institutional sector of Financial Corporations is the one that contributes the most for the financial transactions of the Portuguese economy, both in terms of financial applications such as forms of financing, having a decisive influence in a positive or negative evolution of the financial transactions in the Economy. Finalizing this investigation, various estimates have been constructed for the VAR model in order to determine the relationship between the investment in the economy and the credit issued by Financial Corporations. Thus, it can be concluded that this relationship is positive and significant, and that the credit largely justifies the investment in the economy.
