The objective of this study consists of evaluating the repercussions of the Portuguese crisis of 1890/91 on the Lisbon Stock Exchange (LSE), because if the economic and financial effects of this crisis have been subject of some studies its repercussions in the capital market have never been investigated. For such were used the stock prices of companies listed on the Lisbon Stock Exchange during the period of 1890 to 1899. The study of shareholder?s profitability and volatility was the focus of this analysis, performing it by sector and company. It was concluded that the financial crisis of 1890/1891 affected the equity market of LSE: the period between 1891 and 1893 was identified, in general terms, as a crisis period in terms of the behavior of profitability. It was also concluded that the 1890s decade was a period of significant increase in transactions in the LSE. The dynamism of the equity market has increased, although its features were similar to an emerging market in terms of the weight of the banking sector. Thirdly, and relatively to the effects of the negative impact on volatility, although the relationship between the profitability and volatility rates are not always proportional, in other words, not always a negative value of profitability rate manifests in premium increases in the volatility rate; not meaning that some shocks had not originated great volatility. Finally, it was concluded that exists correlation between profitability and volatility and, although some noted exceptions, it was higher in this period of crisis.
