The Portuguese political system has characteristics (such as the duration of legislatures - 4 years - ideological freedom of parties - except the fascist - and the possibility of replacing a member of the government) that make it an interesting case study regarding the analysis of the importance of politics in the economic development of a country. The design of the economic policies of both major Portuguese political parties (PS and PSD), after Portugal joined the European Economic Community, is the instrument in which this research relies to understand the importance of the relationship, between economics and politics, given those specific characteristics of the Portuguese 5 political system. In particular, we analyze the evolution of the policy of internationalization of the Portuguese economy to the Single Market in the period between 1986 and 2002 and their impact on economic indicators.
