Functional brain responses are strongly influenced by connectivity. Recently, we demonstrated a major example of this: category discriminability within occipitotemporal cortex (OTC) is enhanced for voxel sets that share strong functional connectivity to distal brain areas, relative to those that share lesser connectivity. That is, within OTC regions, sets of 'most-connected' voxels show improved multivoxel patt...

Underfunding Basic Psychological Science Because of the Primacy of the Here and...

Almeida, Jorge

The psychological sciences are suffering from the primacy of the "here and now" and from a radical utilitarian view of science-this is certainly true in less affluent countries around the world. Portugal is a particular case study, as both psychology departments and funding agencies are largely biased toward applied psychology-but this is a more global trend. The field needs to find a balance between applied an...

What makes a Stone topological algebra Profinite

Almeida, Jorge; Goulet-Ouellet, Herman; Klíma, Ondřej

This paper is a contribution to understanding what properties should a topological algebra on a Stone space satisfy to be profinite. We reformulate and simplify proofs for some known properties using syntactic congruences. We also clarify the role of various alternative ways of describing syntactic congruences, namely by finite sets of terms and by compact sets of continuous self mappings of the algebra.
